New Objectivity – “Neue Sachlichkeit” 1918 - 1938

The social extremes produced great tensions in the Weimar Republic, in a progressive way in science and the economy, yet also backwardly so in the society’s hierarchy, which in turn led to even greater misfortune. These realities and misgivings are documented in the art of the “Neue Sachlichkeit” (New Objectivity).

The aftermath of The First World War, the degrading impoverishment of the middle class, the exploitation of the poor and the economic plight that predominated in Germany generated a situation which the artists depicted realistically. The hyper-sharpness and omission of light and shadows often allowed a magical mood to emerge. The exposition of the social, societal and political grievances was unsparingly portrayed.

Frequent topics were militarists, war cripples, beggars, prostitutes, petty bourgeois, pushers and pitiful characters. The anti-bourgeois attitude of the artists was in part rooted in Dadaism. City landscapes, figures and portraits that appear detached and isolated, deserted streets are characteristics of this.

Although the Austrian “Neue Sachlichkeit” was inspired by the German one, it does show more individual variety. Dr Klaus Schröder (Director of the Albertina) describes the art of the Austrian “Neue Sachlichkeit” as “painting from a distance”. The Austrian artists preferred a more humane, apolitical, discrete depiction of the zeitgeist.
